Nenagh Cycle Race Report

4 lads turned up in Nenagh this weekend, Alan Dunlea, Jason Fitz and James Bullman. An 80km race with 3 challenging climbs. On the first climb there was a small crash in the bunch, thankfully all stayed clear but James was caught behind it. It delayed him a bit but he worked hard to get back on. All our lads were prominent near the front throughout the race. Alan Dunlea tried a solo attack for home with 60km to go but thought better of it and the bunch caught up.

As we reached the second climb things got a little busier and James dropped off (mid week drinking does that to you) Alan, Fiachra and Jason climbed well and stayed near the front.

Climb 3 settled the race, with James sweating beer, Fiachra, Alan and Jason crested the hill a little behind young Aidan Custy of Burren race team. Unfortunately there was a group of 11 ahead and the lads weren't in the group. Slowly a group formed on the decent and Alan, Fiachra and Jason drove on to catch the lead group but to no avail.. All finished in top 20 or so around 15 seconds behind the winning group.

Well done all.

Nenagh Triathlon

The first triathlon of the year for the club took place on Saturday in Nenagh. This years race over the sprint distance was a National Series race. GoTri teenager Cillian Tierney finished 3rd in a very competitive field while Carolyn Hayes got her season off to a winning debut winning the ladies and also adding Intervarsity Champion to her long list of national titles.

A surprised Lisa Purtill won her agegroup, along with John mangan and Mairead Elliott, and third in her agegroup was Fiona Mangan (we will claim her for Gotri). Niamh Laffan completed her first triathlon!

Joey Hannon

The day when you know whether you bluffed the winter training or put in the hard slog is at the Joey Hannon Triathlon in UL - This is day we all realise Tri season is here and we are on course for the summer ahead or get the kick in the ass we need to get training.

A huge turnout form GoTri with the new Tri Suits going up and down the pool deck like a Cat walk. This race saw a number of new debutants as well as some of the well established heads making a come back. Designated head coach for the day (soon to be an Ironman) Kieran Boland was on deck to ensure all nerves were contained and offering little nuggets of advice.

Luke O Neill and Jamie Kelly set the tone for the day finishing on the posium in the Junior race while David Richardson put in a powerful performance in the Olymic to take 3rd place.

In the Sprint event Alan O'Brien took silver with Ger Bowen taking 3rd place after eating 7 Sausages before the race. Carolyn Hayes was in super form fresh from her win in Nenagh 24 hours earlier to take the ladies event (3rd place overall also) while her selfie companion Joanne Flanagan had an excellent 3rd place finish.

Back of your minds -

A number of athletes are toying with the notion of doing the Dublin Marathon this year. The good news is you are not alone - there is huge interest this year so this means there will be no lonely long runs as plenty of options for teaming up for the training.

Make 2016 be the year you get this off your bucket list.
